PILOT PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Harbor City High School - East Campus and LearningFront™
2005-2006 Learning Improvement Pilot Project

"Developing an Accelerated Instructional Improvement Strategy"
Purpose

Every high school in Maryland faces a common challenge. By the year 2014, 100% of the students in these schools are expected to meet the proficient level for reading and mathematics. Moreover, students entering the ninth grade in 2005 are required to pass new high school graduation testing requirements. This Learning Improvement Pilot Project, "Developing an Accelerated Instructional Improvement Strategy," was designed by LearningFront™ to support Harbor City High School - East Campus in its quest to show continuous progress in meeting and exceeding this challenge.

Pilot Project Description

The proposed 2005-2006 Harbor City High School - East Campus Learning Improvement Pilot Project will be comprised of three parts: Accelerated Instructional Improvement Strategy, Student Portfolios, and School Instructional Web Site. The Pilot Project will take place in April and May 2006.

Part I: Accelerated Instructional Improvement Strategy
  • Prototype Strategy. LearningFront™ will assist a Pilot Project Team of 15 Harbor City High School - East Campus lead teachers to develop an accelerated instructional improvement strategy to support the academic, attendance, and inclusion needs of their students. The Pilot Project will focus on Mathematics and English content areas and will result in a prototype strategy that can be adapted for the other content areas in the 2006-2007 school year. The prototype strategy will include a process for teachers to plan, teach, assess, and act on the results of standards-based lessons. These lessons will act as prototype lessons for training additional teachers in the accelerated instructional improvement strategy.

  • Coaching Sessions. LearningFront™ will provide a series of coaching sessions to support the work of the lead teachers to develop accelerated standards-based lessons and assessments. After each coaching session, the teachers will teach a standards-based lesson to their students, assess student performances, and discuss the results during the next coaching session. The accelerated standards-based lessons and results will be used to document teaching practices and student learning and to plan for additional data-driven lessons during the Pilot Project. Standards-based lessons and assessments will be aligned and targeted to data from classroom assessments, BCPSS Benchmark assessments, and HSA and MSA results. The results of the lessons will be summarized, examples of student work collected, and the lessons and assessments will be stored in a central location and posted on the Harbor City High School - East Campus instructional web site for other teachers to access.

  • Training Sessions for Lead Teachers. LearningFront™ will provide training sessions to help the Harbor City lead teachers to learn how to use TaskBuilderOnline™ to develop standards-based lessons and BCR and ECR assessments to improve teaching and student achievement. TaskBuilderOnline™ will help the lead teachers to develop engaging and data-driven lessons for the accelerated strategy. These sessions will train the lead teachers who will, in turn, support additional teachers after the Pilot Project. Lead teachers will receive a 3-month subscription to TaskBuilderOnline™ and eLearningTeacher.com™ to develop standards-based lessons, complete online training activities, compile a portfolio of training experiences and results, and link to related online professional development resources. Lead teachers may access their TaskBuilderOnline™ and eLearningTeacher.com™ password-protected accounts and their LearningFront™ coach anywhere, anytime with a computer connected to the Internet.

Part II: Student Portfolios
  • Purpose and Design. A carefully crafted approach for using student portfolios will be developed as part of the Pilot Project. Because of inconsistent student attendance and mobility, portfolio instruction and assessment will provide students and teachers a descriptive and reflective portrayal of what was learned, how and when it was accomplished, and why it was or was not important to the student.

  • Standardized Approach. The Pilot Project Team of lead teachers will consider ways to standardize the student portfolios and apply technology to support their development and maintenance throughout a typical high school experience at Harbor City High School - East Campus.

Part III: School Instructional Web Site
  • Launch a Harbor City High School - East Campus Web Site. LearningFront™ will work with the Pilot Project Team of lead teachers and administrators to design, develop, launch, and host a Harbor City High School - East Campus web site dedicated to accelerated teaching and student achievement.

  • Post Standards-Based Lessons on the Internet. LearningFront™ will post standards-based lessons planned, taught, assessed, and analyzed by the Pilot Project Team of lead teachers on the school's instructional web site that will be dedicated to standards-based instruction and assessment. This will offer all Harbor City teachers the opportunity to both access and share standards-based lessons and assessments with other teachers over the Internet. Moreover, the school instructional web site will support the accelerated instructional improvement process in the 2006-2007 school year.
